BURBANK, CA — The U.S. Postal Service has opened a new state-of-the-art Sorting & Delivery Center (SDC) in Burbank, CA, marking a major milestone in its nationwide effort to modernize operations and improve service for local residents.

The facility, which was unveiled during a special event attended by employees, is designed to streamline package and mail processing, ensuring faster deliveries and a more efficient network. At every level and across every operation, USPS is transforming into a more efficient, high-performing logistics and delivery enterprise supported by a dedicated workforce of nearly 640,000 men and women nationwide. Through its aggressive facility investments aimed at making service more reliable and affordable across the state, the Postal Service has emphasized the safety and wellbeing of its more than 62,500 employees in the state.

“We’re transforming our operations to meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said District Manager Al Santos. “The new Burbank SDC is part of our commitment to delivering faster, more reliable service while creating a better workplace for our dedicated employees.”

This initiative is part of a broader, $40 billion investment across the nation aimed at improving delivery reliability, efficiency, and employee working conditions. To date, nearly $640 million in strategic local investments has been allocated to enhance operations in California. This includes more than $16 million to construct 24 new facilities, more than $233 million to renovate 473 existing structures, and more than $176 million to purchase 60 state-of-the-art package sorting machines across the state.

Several wildfires, all starkly different in size, broke out in Southern California on Tuesday, June 10, prompting evacuation orders as first responders battled the blazes.

The fires follow recent forecasts that point to later summer and fall as when parts of California will see heightened threats of wildfires.

Already, the number of acres that wildfires have consumed in California this year has surpassed figures for the same time from last year and the five-year average, according to statistics from Cal Fire.

As of June 9, over 76,000 acres have burned in California this year, compared to the 21,698 acres as of this time last year and the five-year average of 12,885 acres for the same period.

Here’s what to know about three wildfires that started on Tuesday in Southern California.

Ranch Fire: 4,205-acre fire in Apple Valley 10% contained

The Ranch Fire was first reported in the afternoon of June 10 in the area of Bowden Ranch Road and Coxey Truck Trail south of Apple Valley. By nighttime, the fire had rapidly grown beyond 4,000 acres. The Ranch Fire has consumed 4,205 acres and is 10% contained, according to a 6 a.m. update on Wednesday, June 11, from the Cal Fire San Bernardino/Inyo/Mono Unit. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said. Evacuation orders are in place for Milpas Drive to High Road south of Highway 18, and multiple structures are threatened by the Ranch Fire.

Cahuilla Fire: 175-acre fire in Anza at 80% containment

The Cahuilla Fire was reported in the afternoon of June 10. The brush fire, which broke out south of Highway 371 in Anza, consumed 175 acres before its spread was halted by firefighters. Firefighters made “good progress” overnight, improving containment lines and hitting hot spots, Cal Fire and Riverside County Fire Department said on X before 9 a.m. on June 11. The Cahuilla Fire is 80% contained, and evacuation orders prompted by the fire have been lifted as of Wednesday morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

Bethany Fire: 20-acre fire in Burbank fully contained

Burbank Fire Department responded to a brush fire at 3:30 p.m. on June 10 near Amherst Drive and Bethany Road. The Bethany Fire grew to 20 acres, and forward progress of the fire was stopped by the early evening, according to the fire department and the city. Evacuation orders have since been lifted, and the Burbank Fire Department said that no structures were damaged by the Bethany Fire. The fire has been fully contained, according to Cal Fire.
