The new garden is part of a plan that is meant to maintain the park's historic features while revitalizing the area, according to officials.

FREMONT, CA — A new rose garden celebrating Fremont's "rich horticultural history" will be unveiled at California Nursery Historic Park next week, according to city officials.

The grand opening celebration will take place on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will allow attendants to take a "leisurely stroll" through the garden, which will have new ADA-accessible pathways, Fremont city officials said.

"Inspired by the nursery’s legacy in rose cultivation, the garden blends historic and modern rose varieties to create a lasting tribute," Anisha Mistry, a recreation supervisor with the city of Fremont, told Patch. "Its purpose is to provide a welcoming, inclusive gathering space that celebrates the past while serving today’s community for everyday enjoyment, education, and special events."

Paul Zimmerman, who helped select what roses would be displayed, said online that he wanted to tell the story of the flower's history in California through the garden.

"The logical place to begin is with the rich history of rose breeding in California," Zimmerman said. "It stretches back well over a hundred years and is still going strong.

The new garden is part of a plan that is meant to maintain the park's historic features while revitalizing the area, including a new entry plaza, according to officials.

It features hundreds of roses by several breeders, according to Zimmerman, who hopes the garden will show the "rich, visual" story of roses in California.

"The park will tell the story of the California Nursery Company to current and future generations through the sharing of the site’s remaining historic buildings, majestic arboricultural resources, and display of the carefully preserved artifacts and documents," city officials said online.

California Nursery Historic Park is located at 36501 Niles Blvd.

FREMONT, CA — An anime event will take place at a unique location on Saturday: at a BART station.

The inaugural “Let’s Glow! BART Anime Festival” will get underway from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Warm Springs/South Fremont station plaza. The free, all-ages event will feature an “artist alley” with anime- and transit-inspired artworks and games; a Railgoods pop-up shop; fan club and community tables; free wotagei lessons; decorations; live DJs; anime-inspired cars and scooters; and food and boba stands.

“The BART Anime Project, from which the festival stems, has been a great way for us to engage with young people and encourage them to ride BART," said Chris Filippi, a BART spokesperson. “These young riders are essential to the future of public transit.”

The project includes anime mascots, which were introduced in 2023, following an open call for California-based artists to submit their ideas. After receiving close to 500 submissions, BART officials said they selected several artists "to conceptualize and create" the mascots, who are now BART's "friendly and approachable avatars."

“Nearly half of Gen Z in the United States – a growing and reliable ridership demographic – watches anime,” Filippi said. “A critical part of engaging with young riders is to meet them where they are at and build connections through their own interests.”

The BART- and Bay Area-themed anime mascots will have a presence at “Let's Glow” on displays and merchandise and via boba drink offerings.

The first 50 people who arrive at the event by BART on Saturday will get a free “Let’s Glow” light stick, according to BART staff. Look for anime mascot Mira by the station agent booth for the light stick giveaway.

A limited number of “Let’s Glow” light sticks will also be sold at the event, officials said.

On Aug. 30, Californians without a fishing license will be able to explore a new hobby on Free Fishing Day.

FREMONT, CA —Whether you're a seasoned angler or you've always wanted to try your luck at catching a rainbow trout, California is hosting Free Fishing Day on Aug. 30 for all to enjoy.

On this day, all fees and license requirements will be waived, allowing Californians to discover or revisit the activity, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In Fremont, here are the nearest waters to fish:

"It’s a great excuse to relax next to a beautiful lake or river and enjoy the great outdoors, and you might go home with tasty fish to throw on the grill," the CDFW wrote in a statement.

While children 15 and younger can fish for free every day of the year in the Golden State, there are only two Free Fishing Days this summer, where anyone and everyone can experience the hobby for free.

California is known to be a great place to fish, with hundreds of fishing locations and boat launches available for use around the state.

"Dozens of bodies of water across the Golden State await anglers with catchable-size trout recently stocked by CDFW hatcheries staff," according to CDFW.

Interested anglers can choose between many of California's lakes, streams and rivers. Fishing is also available on some piers, jetties and breakwaters along the coast. To find more fishing locations around the state, visit this link.

Anglers might be able to catch freshwater fish such as Black Bass, Brook Trout, Coastal Rainbow Trout, White Sturgeon, Striped Bass, Sacramento Perch, Kokanee salmon and more.

But before heading out, be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations for each water you plan to visit.
