Los Angeles got its first real taste of Mirador at The Fonda Theatre, and the verdict was immediate: this band isn’t an offshoot or a side project – it’s a statement. The union of former Greta Van Fleet guitarist Jake Kiszka and Ida Mae’s Chris Turpin has produced something rawer, darker, and far more deliberate than either’s past work. Their debut Los Angeles performance felt like the ignition point for a new force in modern hard rock, one that values both intensity and craft equally.

Opening the evening was the artist Linka Moja. Linka opened up the night by taking her classic rock inspiration and giving it a modern twist that makes it feel relevant in today’s world, seamlessly merging folk melodies, rock instrumentation, and soulful rhythms.

The lights dropped to deep crimson, and Mirador walked on. Kiszka’s guitar growled first – thick, blues-soaked, and unrelenting – cutting through the Fonda’s air like a blade. Turpin followed with that unmistakable rasp, equal parts preacher and storm, channeling a kind of primal catharsis that pushed the room to its edge. From the opening track, “Vultures,” it was clear this wasn’t nostalgia rock – it was elemental, visceral, and alive.

Songs like “Heels of the Hunt” and “Ashes To Earth” showcased Kiszka’s evolution as a guitarist. Gone were the Zeppelin comparisons that dogged his early years; his tone here was leaner, more purposeful, with a modern grit that owed as much to Queens of the Stone Age as it did to Cream. Turpin’s presence, meanwhile, grounded the chaos; his rhythm guitar and vocal phrasing lent the band’s stormier tendencies a soulful gravity.

Mid-set, Mirador slowed things briefly with “Must I Go Bound,” a moody ballad that revealed surprising depth and restraint. The song built slowly from a whisper into a roar, with Kiszka bending a single note into a wail that hung in the rafters. The moment landed not as a breather but as an emotional high point, a reminder that power doesn’t always require volume.

But when the volume returned, it did so with devastating precision. “Blood and Custard” was pulverizing in the best sense – tight, dynamic, and executed with a clarity that separated Mirador from most emerging hard rock acts.

Their nearly an hour-and-forty-five-minute set consisted of just ten songs, extended, hard-rock odysseys that blurred the line between composition and controlled chaos. Each jam unfolded like a living thing, evolving, mutating, and finding new shape in real time. For fans of hard rock, the set passed in the blink of an eye, a reminder that when musicians play without fear of limits, time itself seems to bend to their will. Live, Mirador is an entirely different beast – louder, rawer, and more immediate than any studio recording could capture. Their performance at The Fonda wasn’t just heard; it was felt, every riff and rhythm hitting with the kind of physical force that defines true rock and roll.

At The Fonda, Mirador didn’t just announce themselves – they demanded attention. It was a performance that bridged worlds: the elegance of musicianship and the ferocity of instinct. And in that middle ground, something entirely new was born.

In an effort to cut down on noise pollution from suddenly blaring advertisements on, say, Netflix or Disney+, California legislators have passed a law to mandate that the noise level of commercials is at the same level as the movie or TV series being streamed.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill, SB 576, that had been shepherded by Sen. Thomas Umberg (D-Santa Ana) through the legislative process. It had passed unanimously on the Senate and Assembly floor earlier this month in Sacramento.

The passage means that, starting on July 1 of next year, major streaming services won’t be able to “transmit the audio of commercial advertisements louder than the video content the advertisements accompany,” the bill’s text reads.

The law asks streaming services to follow the Federal Communications Commission’s Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, which went in to effect in 2012 for linear TV and radio but does not currently apply to streamers. That effort was spurred by the FCC receiving more than 130,000 complaints in 2010, “the vast majority of which concerned the excessively loud sound of commercials,” the state’s Assembly analysis recounted.

“Many platforms have introduced tiered subscription models that require consumers to pay a premium to avoid commercials, bringing ad-supported viewing, and the loudness of those ads, back into focus for millions of users,” the Assembly briefing noted. Indeed, price hikes across the board from streaming services have by default pushed consumers to the cheaper options, which now include regular commercial breaks just like old school TV.

A bill analysis by Senate legislature committee staff noted that the Motion Picture Association, which lobbies on behalf of Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Amazon MGM Studios, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. Discovery, had voiced opposition to the effort.

“The Motion Picture Association says that since streaming services are working voluntarily to address the issue of loud advertisements, SB 576 is unnecessary,” the analysis read. “They note that many streaming services have undertaken reasonable efforts to adjust the loudness of advertisements that come from server-side ad insertion that may be inconsistent with the loudness of the programs.”

Newsom, on signing the bill on Oct. 6, touted its volume-lowering impact, saying, “We heard Californians loud and clear, and what’s clear is that they don’t want commercials at a volume any louder than the level at which they were previously enjoying a program.”

This should be a good year for apple picking, according to the 2025 forecast from the U.S. Apple Association, which estimates the harvest will be 6 percent higher than in 2024, for a total of 273 million bushels.

(Updated with more data, details & a new chart) The first round of California’s $750 million tax incentives program announced today is betting big on Hollywood, literally and fictionally.

Snagging $13 million in credits, season two of Lionsgate and AppleTV+‘s Emmy-nominated The Studio is one of 22 television projects the state has approved under its just more than doubled Film and Television Tax Credit Program. The Land, that new Hulu drama from Dan Fogelman got the largest allocation Wednesday with nearly $43 million. Awarded almost $10 million, a new Larry David series (not Curb 2.0) are also among shows unveiled today that are, all in, projected to bring $1.1 billion to the state’s economy in wages and other expenditures.

This is the first round of tax credits since the state expanded available funding for qualified film and television productions significantly for the first time in over a decade. Aiming to turn the tide in Hollywood, the Gavin Newsom fueled move followed devastating wildfires last year that capped decades of runaway production.

According to the California Film Commission, applications jumped nearly 400% with the sweetened incentives. Having said that, the CFC and their PR team didn’t offer any hard numbers of what that 400% rise is in real numbers.

Still, check out the varied projects tentatively awarded tax credits today, including an unnamed AppleTV+ series relocating to the Golden State for its third season that got $22.18 million. This new chart, replacing one sent to us that contained info not meant for public consumption it seems, has, like the previous chart, the amounts the successful applicants are estimated to inject into the state’s economy:

As you can see above, other series successful in this round include Group Chat, a new 20th Television pilot for Hulu from Kenya Barris, and the second season of Tom Segura’s Netflix series Bad Thoughts, which is relocating from Texas.

“I am thrilled that we are going to be able to shoot Group Chat in Los Angeles thanks to the California Film Commission tax credit,” says Group Chat creator, EP and showrunner Barris.

“As an LA native, I feel lucky to have been able to shoot so many projects here throughout my career and love that we’ll be able to continue spotlighting our incredible city, its people and the culture,” the black-ish chief added. “Not only does this credit allow us to work with the best crews and craftspeople around but, more importantly, it allows us to create jobs and support the LA film community at a time when it’s more important than ever.”

Deadline had exclusively reported last week that more allocations were on the way after a round in June, when Dan Fogelman and Ryan Murphy collectively snapped up nearly $40 million in funding.

The shows are a combination of five renewals, two productions relocating to California and fifteen new series, including one limited series and three pilots. Collectively, the projects are expected to employ 6,500 cast and crew members, along with 46,100 background performers (measured in days worked). While most filming will take place in Los Angeles, four projects will shoot at least partially outside the region.

“California has long been the entertainment capital of the world — and the newly expanded film and TV tax credit program is keeping it that way,” said the Governor, who has been getting even more attention that usual for his trolling of Donald Trump. This program means paychecks for middle-class workers, opportunities for small businesses and investment in communities up and down the state,” added Newsom. “We’re not just protecting our legacy — we’re reminding the world why the Golden State remains the beating heart of film and television.”

His office said the shows are projected to generate $714 million in qualified expenditures and $413 million in qualified wages across the Golden State. They will account for more than 1,100 filming days statewide, a major boost to local economies up and down California.

With the big bucks small screen incentives now out there, the next round of feature film and independent production applications are open right now for a few more days. The lucky applicants will be informed by the California Film Commission early this fall.
