LA County is home to 20 of the top 100 taco spots in the U.S., including one in Long Beach, according to Yelp.

LONG BEACH, CA — It's no secret that Southern California is home to some of the very best tacos in the U.S. Now, that fact has been backed up by Yelp with its crowning of one LA taqueria as the No. 1 best taco spot in the country.

Yelp's top pick — Birrieria Familia Castro in North Hollywood — is one of 20 LA County restaurants that appear on the site's Top 100 Taco Spots of 2025. Another local top-100 pick is Long Beach's PlanTita’s Kitchen, which serves up Mexican favorites in vegan form.

“Our birria is a family tradition passed down from my grandmother, who learned it from her mother,” Birrieria Familia Castro co-owner Anthony Castro told Yelp.

The Castros' birria recipe is closely guarded. Yelp says the Tijuana street food — slow-stewed beef with consomé for dipping — continues to be a popular focus among its top-rated taquerias. It's No. 2 pick, New York City's Birria-Landia, has its own take on the dish.

And Yelp identified a less-familiar take on the handheld food as a rising trend in its list: vampiro tacos. The dish features tortillas griddled until charred, chewy and curled up like bat wings, then folded. The popular street food from Sinaloa, Mexico is particularly popular in LA.

Birrieria Familia Castro has them on its menu, as does Yelp's No. 10 spot — Mariscos El Chito in El Sereno — and at its No. 40 pick, Tacos El Vampiro in Sylmar.

Yelp's picks represent what Angelenos know to be true: The best food in the city can be found at a Michelin starred restaurant, at a taco stand on the side of the road, from a food truck, or in someone's garage.

This past weekend the Long Beach Chapter had the joy of helping bring to life a mural that will be a stunning backdrop to their Ocean Friendly Garden at Shoreline Village. The incredible artist duo from Studio Tutto guided our volunteer painters through the process of bringing this mural to life, celebrating the connection and harmony between our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Surfrider Foundation's Ocean Friendly Gardens program protects clean water at the coast by using nature-based solutions and sustainable landscaping practices to prevent runoff pollution. The rain garden that accompanies this new mural is collecting and repurposing the stormwater from the building's roof, preventing runoff pollution while creating a beautiful, biodiverse landscape. The chapter installed this project with volunteers and local partners about a year and a half ago, and are stoked to continue celebrating it with the new mural.

The mural does a great job of illustrating the seamless connection between our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, blurring the lines between kelp forests and above-water plant habitats. The marine blue background unites the plants and wildlife in the mural, reminding us that water unites and connects us all from land to the sea. When we steward our Ocean Friendly Gardens, we are caring for the oceans, waves, and beaches we love.

The mural also highlights many of the California and Channel Islands native plants that are featured in the rain garden and naturally found in the region. Bright red blooms from channel islands snapdragons, magenta puffs of red-flowered buckwheat, and vibrant lilac California asters are all focal points of the murals design. These deeply rooted native plants resist erosion, soak up rainwater, and support healthy, living soils that are ready to sponge up extra water. Above ground, they provide habitat for native pollinators like sand wasps, fiery skipper moths, and gray hairstreak butterflies.

The day was full of creative energy, connection, and a relaxed focus as participants immersed themselves in painting. The artists outlined the mural design the previous night, marking the shapes and colors that defined the kelp forest, native plants, and pollinators against the watery blue background. Volunteers then got to work filling in each shape in a paint-by-numbers style with a designated color. Some people only painted a small part and were content, others worked their way around the walls and stayed for a while to see the project progress.

Many folks passing by on the bike path or walking paths yelled encouraging words, exclaiming, "thank you!" or, "it looks great!" and many curious passerby stopped to chat with us. It was a great way to introduce more people to our Long Beach Chapter of Surfrider, talk about our Ocean Friendly Gardens project that was right next to the mural, and explain the theme of the artwork being painted. A few people walking by even joined us to paint!

The chapter did a lot of work behind the scenes to help communicate the goals and themes of the mural to the artists, fund the initial design, and work with multiple city departments to get the permits and approvals needed. The determination and enthusiasm from our volunteers and executive committee really made it possible for this awesome artwork to cross the finish line.

Metropolitan Water District's (MWD) Community Partnering Program and Long Beach Utilities Department generously supported the cost of the materials and installation, and the Parks, Rec, and Marine Department prepped the walls and painted the base coat for the mural. Long Beach, CA (September 30, 2025) – A traffic collision at the intersection of Artiger St and Gary Ave led to injuries Monday afternoon, prompting an advanced life support (ALS) response from emergency crews.

The incident occurred around 2:46 PM in a residential section of Long Beach’s 90805 area. Fire and rescue units, including Engine 182 and Squad 183, were dispatched to the scene where at least one person was reportedly injured in the crash.

First responders provided on-site medical assistance to those hurt, while traffic in the area was temporarily impacted as emergency vehicles occupied the roadway. The exact number of vehicles involved has not been confirmed, but the nature of the dispatch indicates the injuries required immediate and specialized care.

Located near neighborhood schools and local parks, the intersection of Artiger and Gary is frequently traveled by both residents and delivery traffic, raising concerns about visibility and right-of-way enforcement at the time of the crash.

Officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. As of this morning, there has been no release of further details regarding the injured parties or potential contributing factors.

Cardi B is hitting the pavement to promote her sophomore album “Am I the Drama?”

The Grammy-winning rapper will be hosting various meet-and-greets across the country, and one of them lands right here in Southern California.

The music store, Fingerprints in Long Beach, California, will host a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity for fans on Sept. 25.

“If you want to attend this very special event, place your preorder for ‘Am I The Drama?’ on CD at our website now. Once ordered, the name on the order will be added to our guest list automatically. You may purchase up to 4 CDs if you want to bring friends/children. No need to pay for shipping, just select ‘pickup’ as your shipping option and we will have the CDs for you at the event,” Fingerprints explained on its website.

“Please note that Cardi B will not be signing; this is for a meet and photo op only. Space is limited, but if you get your order in, you will be guaranteed a spot on the guest list.”

The music store said that they are hoping to have vinyl copies of the album available at the time of the event as well. However, they’re only taking CD preorders right now, just in case the vinyls don’t arrive in time.

“If we can get vinyl, you may upgrade your CD order to LP at the event by simply paying the difference,” the store said.

This is the “Bodak Yellow” singer’s first album in seven years. Her debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” was released in 2018 and was the best-selling female rap album of the 2010s, according to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. It has also been certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The album earned her the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album as a solo artist, making her the first female rapper to do so.

Prior to releasing her first album, she had released various mixtapes and singles. She’s also released plenty of singles since 2018, with fans pleading with her to release an entire album.

“Am I the Drama?” is out on Sept. 19.
