For more than two decades, the original Bluewater Grill in Newport Beach’s Cannery Village has been serving sensational seafood dishes. This fall, that tradition continues as the restaurant will spotlight its Pacific Swordfish, Lobster Pot Pie and California Spiny Lobster during its Second Tuesday Tastings.

The fall menu items are part of a year-long schedule designed by Bluewater chefs to introduce first-time customers to the popular restaurant and the latest global seafood tastes, and remind veteran customers what they’re missing.

The Second Tuesday Tastings have been a Bluewater staple for almost 25 years. The Second Tuesday Tastings are chef-prepared two-course meals featuring a starter and seafood main course paired with two hand-selected local or international wines. Seafood selections typically follow Bluewater’s seasonal menu specials designed to offer customers a continuing cycle of new seafood and shellfish culinary experiences.

The cost for both courses with wine pairings is usually $55 per person, an amazing price considering what you get.

For example, the Bluewater Second Tuesday Tasting on October 14 is “Pacific Swordfish Spectacular.” First course is a Tomato & Artichoke Salad paired with a popular Sangria. They follow that up with Pacific Swordfish humanely taken from fishermen aboard Bluewater Grill’s own Pilikia fishing boat and accompanied with an Abadia de Campio from Spain’s Albarino white wine region.

That same day is National Dessert Day. All Bluewater desserts are half price on this day only. That’s a savings of up to $6.50.

The Bluewater Second Tuesday Tasting on November 11 is “Lobster Pot Pie Holiday.” Start with choice of Salad or Housemade Chowder paired with an Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Follow that up with a decadent Lobster Pot Pie and glass of Jospeh Drouhin Chardonnay from France’s Macon Villages.

The final Second Tuesday Tasting on December 9 is “California Lobster Encore.” Start with choice of Salad or Housemade Chowder followed by a California Spiny Lobster harvested locally. Wine pairings include a Maso Canali Pinot Grigio and Querceto Chianti Classico, both from Italy. The cost for this special evening is $85 per person.

A soft opening a few days prior gave franchise owners Eduardo Castelan and Tim Littman an indication members of the community would be excited for the Mediterranean lifestyle brand’s offerings.

“I knew we needed to bring Go Greek down here to O.C.,” Littman said.

Founded in 2012 by David Subotic, his wife, Tanja, and Jonathan Williams, Go Greek Yogurt has brought probiotic-packed, authentic Greek yogurt to the fast casual market.

“Thirteen years ago, we opened our first Go Greek Yogurt in Beverly Hills, inspired by a love for authentic Mediterranean traditions,” Tanja Subotic said. “We’re honored to now expand into Orange County — a milestone that reflects the spirit of our Go Greek family and our mission to share the nourishment, flavor and timeless health of the Mediterranean way of life.”

The small chain has earned favor with celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Gigi Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian and Britney Spears. While living in Los Angeles, Castelan and Littman became fans too.

Littman, a Mission Viejo native, felt confident the health-conscious community in Orange County would enjoy the thick, creamy yogurt.

“I know people here will like it but also we wanted to move down here and wanted to bring it with us,” Littman said.

The Newport Beach location is the fourth in California and the 13th internationally. The outlet offers both fresh and frozen yogurt. Adding to the authenticity, the yogurt is imported from Greece.

“Our Greek yogurt is higher in protein and lower in sugar, naturally,” Castelan said. “We don’t add any sugar to our yogurt.”

The fresh, classic yogurt is served in three sizes with house flavors like plain tart, Greek honey and chocolate. There is also a rotating menu of flavors — sour cherry, rose, hazelnut, guava and passion fruit among them. Fresh yogurt can be enjoyed plain or customized with healthy toppings, such as chia seeds, slivered almonds and granola or fresh fruit, including dates, strawberries and pineapple. For the sweet tooth, there are candy toppings like gummies and chocolate chips.

Frozen yogurt is sold in the the same house flavors in three sizes but with a more extensive menu of rotating flavors, such as peanut butter, lemon and strawberry, as well as plenty of topping choices. Vegan options are available too.

Yogurt smoothies and more composed yogurt bowls designed to be a snack or meal are on the menu in sweet and savory varieties. The Althea bowl is a sweet option, made with strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, goji berries, shaved chocolate and a drizzle of Greek honey. The Greek salad bowl is savory with Persian cucumbers, grape tomatoes, Kalamata olives and finished with olive oil, oregano, Himalayan sea salt and crushed black pepper.

Littman hopes customers will see Go Greek as a healthy alternative to ice cream or other frozen treats, although the fresh yogurt bowls have proved to be popular as a healthy snack.

“Most people come in for frozen yogurt,” said Littman. “But here in Newport Beach we have had a lot of people coming in for the fresh yogurt too.”

Go Greek Yogurt is now open at 191 Riverside Ave, Unit C in Newport Beach from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

A proposal to bring a wave pool to Newport Beach passed a major hurdle this week, earning approval by the Planning Commission, moving it on to the City Council for consideration in October.

Planning commissioners voted unanimously Thursday night, Sept. 4, to approve the environmental impact report and conditional use permit, agreeing with staff recommendations to send the plan ahead to the City Council for an ultimate decision on whether the wave pool can be built on the north end of the beach town.

About 20 speakers voiced opinions about the project, a mix of those who want to see the Newport Beach Golf Course remain intact and others vocal about supporting the surf pool, which would be located near the John Wayne Airport.

City Senior Planner Joselyn Perez went over the Snug Harbor wave pool project, proposed to replace the middle section of the golf course, where three holes, a driving range, restaurant and bar and a pro shop currently sit.

The project would build a three-story, 50-foot-tall building for a surf academy, shop and restaurant, with a second floor for a fitness and yoga area with locker rooms and lounge, and a third floor dedicated to office space and VIP music recording studio. The basement would have golf cart and surfboard storage.

Another 40-foot, 2-story building would have athlete accommodations with 20 rooms.

While the project needs a major site development review, it is consistent with the general plan with respect to the physical and environmental characteristics of the site, Perez said. The architectural style is also compatible, using wood, whites and earth tones.

Traffic was detailed during the presentation, with existing uses generating about 1,810 trips. The surf pool anticipates 1,996 trips, with fewer than the golf course in the evening hours.

There would be an estimated 1,400 visitors daily, about 388 at any given time, with 70 employees, 25 on site at any given time, Perez said. Parking would offer 351 spots, 95 for golfers of the remaining 15-hole course.

The surfing lagoon that is proposed would have two 5.1 million-gallon basins. The surf pool would have a bi-annual draining, with water captured into the county recycling and reuse program.

Construction would take about 18 months.

Shawna Schaffner, project manager for the development group Back Bay Barrels, described the project in more detail, noting that the Wavegarden technology is one of the quietest on the market, as well as the most energy efficient.

Solar panels are expected to generate nearly half the energy required for wave making and circulation.

The wave pool would be expected to use 28 million gallons of water annually, 15 million to be returned to the Orange County Water District supply via groundwater replenishment system, Schaffner said.

By comparison, an 18-hole golf course uses 150- to 200-million gallons, with the three holes to be eliminated producing about 25- to 30-million gallons.

Community benefits include kids camps, a place for high school surf teams to use, as well as a place for first responders to do training in a controlled environment, Schaffner said.

The wave pool could hold an estimated 72 surfers, with an average of about 42 expected. There would be eight lifeguards stationed around the pool, as well as a control tower, with an estimated 25-second response time.

Benny Hallock, volunteer chair of the Save Newport Beach Golf Course group, said an estimated 7,500 community members have signed a petition against the project.

“It’s a community beacon,” he said of the course, noting for it to be PGA certified, it needs 18 holes. “The community doesn’t want it.”

Heather Cieslak, operations director for the Newport Bay Conservancy, noted that the nearby Newport Bay is one of the city’s most precious resources.

Cieslak voiced concern about the construction, urging surveys and work be done outside of the nesting season. She also said the project should eliminate non-native plant species and instead use native, drought-tolerant species.

Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Andy Cox said the Snug Harbor planners have talked to nearby agencies about year-round training potential.

“We don’t have a consistent way of going over things. If there was more consistency adding to our training, it’s just going to make it better, save lives,” Cox said. “Having a controlled environment to train in will save lives in Huntington and Newport, absolutely.”

Planning Commissioner Mark Rosene noted the project preserves golf, but also adds a new, unique experience, and made the motion to approve the application, which was approved 6-0 by commissioners.

The proposal went before the Airport Land Use Commission on Aug. 7, which found the project inconsistent with airport operations.

The next steps include the City Council considering a notice of intent to override the ALUC decision on Sept. 9, and then voting on overriding the inconsistent land use decision on Oct. 28, at the same meeting voting whether to certify the EIR and deciding whether to approve the project.

State Lands Commission draft report weighs in on Newport Beach mooring permits

But uncertainty surrounding the future of Newport Beach’s tidelands management, particularly in regards to private transfers of permits, gives Leverenz pause.

“Considering that the city may take all this away, I decided not to lose more money,” he said. “I’m waiting to see how things turn out.”

Last summer, the Newport Beach City Council appeared to strike a compromise that would allow for mooring permit rates to increase substantially while freezing existing rates for longtime permit holders.

City staff also suggested phasing out private mooring permit transfers with one transfer allowed within four years, and no later than Aug. 21, 2028. Permits would then transfer to the city’s licensing program.

The City Council moved forward with passing the law, which was set to increase rates for on-shore moorings — used by boat owners who store their boats when not in use — from $1.67 per linear foot to $7.77. Off-shore rates were going to see an increase from $3.35 per linear foot to $17.78.

But the California State Lands Commission interjected after the July 9, 2024 council vote and shelved a second vote indefinitely while it reviewed potential “violations of the trust grant” that allows Newport Beach to manage the tidelands.

At an Aug. 21 commission meeting, a draft report prepared by commission staff concluded that an appraisal carried out to calculate mooring permit hikes was generally “reasonable” but that Newport Beach officials should review the July 9 compromise to ensure fairness in tidelands management.

“This commission does not set the rates for the pier,” said Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, who chairs the commission. “This is not our call, this the city’s call. We have issued this report. It may not be what [people] were necessarily looking for, but it was appropriate for us to issue this review.”

The State Lands Act has an anti-discriminatory clause, in part, where it concerns rates.

As mooring permit holders have long decried an inequity between mooring permit and residential pier rates for homeowners who have a dock on their property, the draft report found that latter is far below fair market value.

“The city appears to have treated its residential pier leases, who are necessarily city residents, more favorably than its mooring permit holders,” the draft report read.

Newport Beach has contracted for an appraisal of the residential pier rates, which is currently underway.

Assistant City Manager Seimone Jurjis told the Daily Pilot the city is still digesting the draft report, but that its findings were expected.

“We’re just at the beginning of the process and looking at the residential piers,” he said. “Eventually, we’re going to do a comparison of residential piers to the mooring rates. We want to make sure that we’re in compliance with the commission.”

According to the draft report, current residential pier rates are 58 cents per square foot, which was considered too low with fair market value being double the rate.

Jurjis stressed that city officials want to reach out to both commission staff and mooring permit holders in moving forward.

The commission came down hardest on the private sale of mooring permits, which it deemed a possible violation of the Public Trust Doctrine. The draft report found that permit sales created a market where prices ranged from $10,000 to $60,000 and urged Newport Beach to put a stop to the transactions.

“The commission made their position clear,” Jurjis said. “People can’t be buying and selling state tidelands. It’s the public’s lands, the state’s lands. Transferability is going to have to come to an end at some point.”

After the commission meeting, the Newport Mooring Assn. posted the draft report on its website.

The group welcomed the report’s focus on key differences between moorings and residential pier policies.

But it also flagged concerns surrounding the appraisal while questioning the commission’s stance on permit transferability as a possible Public Trust Doctrine violation, an interpretation the group sees as one that “does not accurately reflect this long-standing practice in many harbors.”

Speaking on his own behalf, Leverenz considers an end to permit transfers as very troubling.

“There’s retirees out here,” he said. “Some people have spent their life savings with assurances from the city that their permits would remain transferable.”

In the meantime, the commission is accepting comments on its draft report ahead of issuing a final report by its Dec. 16 meeting.

Mooring permit holders who turned out to the commission’s meeting in August called for Newport Beach’s tidelands management to be discussed at a special meeting this month.

Despite calls from mooring permit holders to do so, the commission hasn’t scheduled such a meeting.

The Newport Mooring Assn. is turning its immediate attention to the Newport Beach Harbor Commission, which recommended the mooring permit raises, and will be making a presentation about its work the commission’s next meeting, set for 5 p.m. Wednesday.
