A hotel in the heart of Ojai, California, is returning to its roots after a storied history for the last half century. Hotel El Roblar originally opened in 1919 but fell into disarray. It was converted into a spa in the 1970s but closed due to the Thomas Fire in 2017. Now Ojai’s longest-standing hotel is reopening on June 19, according to the Ojai Valley News.

Eric Goode, Jeremy McBride, Warner Ebbink and Ramin Shamshiri purchased the property and transformed Hotel El Roblar to highlight its Spanish Revival and early Californian architecture while updating its bones.

The hotel was designed by architects Frank Mead and Richard Requa, who helped shape and design Southern California in the early 20th century. According to news reports at the time, the name “El Roblar” was chosen to reflect a cluster of white oaks.

The hotel was later transformed into the Oaks, an all-inclusive spa that was established in 1977. The business was owned by Sheila Cluff, a professional figure skater-turned-aerobics guru who once starred and hosted a fitness show on TV in Southern California. When she purchased the property, she called it “an old run-down hotel,” but she gradually updated the property, which sits in view of the Topatopa Mountains.

Goode told the Ventura County Star that they dutifully tried to honor the hotel’s original look, drawing on historic photos to recreate the El Roblar of the past.

“The lobby should look a lot like it did 100 years ago,” Goode told the Ventura County Star.

The revamped hotel remains an intimate property, featuring only 50 total rooms that start at $495 per night, according to the hotel’s website. There are 31 rooms in the main house, 11 rooms are bungalows, and eight rooms are in a new building on the property called the Sycamore House. There’s also a pool, gym, treatment room and event space. On its FAQ section, Hotel El Roblar confirmed that there is a minimum age policy and that it’s “intended for adults 18 years and older.”

The new owners faced opposition during the remodel. In 2022, city council members considered an appeal from the community group Simply Ojai. The group argued that the hotel didn’t have enough parking spots and that reopening the hotel would change the neighborhood. But the city council rejected the appeals, concluding that a historic restoration project was different than putting a new hotel in its place.

As El Roblar begins to accept reservations, Goode told Ojai Valley News that his version of success is predicated on how well they preserved the property’s century-old charm.

“I will know I’ve got it right when someone is checking in a year from now and it will feel like it’s always been there,” he said.
