NORTH BAY, CA—Two local cheeses were named Best of Show at the California State Fair's 2025 Commercial Cheese Competition on Monday, the fair announced.

Marin French Cheese won Best of Show cow's milk cheese for its Golden Gate washed rind cheese. The Marin County creamery is the oldest cheese company in the United States, founded in 1865.

The triple crème Golden Gate cheese is aged for 14 days during which it is handwashed with brine. It has a "deep, savory flavor, pungent aroma and gooey texture," according to the creamery.

Golden Gate was also named best semi-soft cow's milk cheese at the fair.

Mendocino County's Pennyroyal Farm won Best of Show other milk type for its Boont Corners Reserve. The creamery produces small batch cheeses using milk from goats and sheep raised at its farm in Anderson Valley.

Boont Corners Reserve is made from raw goat's milk. According to the farm, the cheese is made in the summer when the milk is lower in fat. It's aged for 12 months, resulting in a firm cheese with a sweet and nutty flavor.

It's the third Best of Show award for Pennyroyal in the past decade, the fair said.

Pennyroyal Farm also won three other awards in the other milk type category, including Boont Corners Reserve being named best hard cheese. The creamery's Boont Corners 2 Month won best semi-hard cheese, and its Fratty Corners won best semi-soft cheese.

Marin County creamery Point Reyes Farmstead, won the award for best cow's milk hard cheese for its Point Reyes Gouda.

A panel of 12 judges, all specialists in the world of cheese, tasted their way through 113 entries, judging each cheese's appearance, aroma, texture and taste.

Marin French Cheese and Pennyroyal Farm will be recognized at an award ceremony at the fair on July 21, 2025.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA —The public is invited to review and comment on newly published Fire Hazard Severity maps recently updated by CalFire to show areas of Sonoma County with the greatest wildfire risks.

The maps show areas of the county that have moderate, high and very high fire hazard severity, defined as having physical conditions that create expected fire behavior over 50 years.

Per government code, local fire districts must adopt the maps. Because Sonoma County fire districts can recommend changes during a 120-day adoption period, community members should contact their local fire districts for questions and to provide comments, the county said.

The maps do not show fire hazard information for areas within the boundaries of incorporated cities like Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa and Healdsburg. The maps do show areas of concern right outside each of the cities. These are local response areas and state response areas.

Notably, the map below for Petaluma has no red-shaded areas. Red represents a very high level of fire hazard severity. The map shows some orange-shaded areas southeast of Petaluma, with orange representing high levels of fire hazard severity. Most of the remaining areas surrounding the city are shaded yellow, meaning moderate levels of fire hazard severity are present.

Once adopted, the fire hazard severity maps will impact development by dictating the materials and construction methods for exterior wildfire exposure, requiring a natural hazard disclosure during a real estate transaction, mandating a 100-foot defensible space buffer around a property, and triggering development standards regarding road width, water supply, signage, and other features.

Will The New Maps Impact Insurance Rates?

According to a list of FAQs from the California Department of Insurance, the insurance companies for many years have been using alternate wildfire risk tools for determining where they will write and renew policies and how much premium to charge a policyholder, not the Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps.

Therefore, the department said, a change in designation on the maps for a single homeowner is unlikely to affect their insurance.

"The reality is that more accurate risk information enables homeowners and communities to reduce their wildfire risks, and Commissioner Lara’s new wildfire mitigation regulation clarifies what actions you should take to reduce wildfire risks. Once that regulation is fully implemented, if a homeowner or business owner takes those risk mitigation actions, they will be able to see a discount in their insurance premium."

The recently updated fire hazard severity maps guide local planning and policy, not insurance decisions. Insurance companies use risk models, which differ from hazard models, because they consider the susceptibility of a structure to damage from fire and other short-term factors that are not included in hazard modeling, the California Department of Insurance said. Insurance risk models incorporate additional factors that change more frequently than those that Cal Fire includes in its hazard mapping, which is built to remain steady.

Petaluma Students Can Apply For STEM Scholarship From PG&E Foundation

PETALUMA, CA—Students from Petaluma and Sonoma County pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math—STEM—disciplines are invited to apply for PG&E Corporation Foundation's annual Better Together STEM Scholarship Program.

For eligible students, the PG&E Foundation will provide a total of $350,000 for 60 scholarship awards in the amounts of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500.

Better Together STEM Scholarships are designed to allow the next generation of Californians to learn and succeed in higher education and support students who have made an impact in their community or who have overcome personal challenges, PG&E officials said.

"We applaud all future engineers, scientists and innovators," said Jake Zigelman, PG&E vice president for the Bay Area region. "These essential professions help power the state's clean energy progress, ultimately benefitting all Californians. The PG&E Corporation Foundation is proud to play a part in helping these local students achieve their educational goals."

Over the years, PG&E said, the scholarship program has evolved to help more students and their families lessen the financial burden of attending college.

In 2023, the PG&E Foundation added a new $5,000 scholarship that expanded the program to 20 additional students—up from 40 to 60 student recipients. In 2022, responding to a trend in applications from students admitted to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, PG&E expanded eligibility to students planning to attend HBCUs anywhere in the United States, in addition to California colleges and universities.

Since 2012, PG&E said, the Better Together STEM Scholarship Program has awarded $7.45 million to accomplished students based on a combined demonstration of community leadership, personal triumph, financial need and academic achievement.

Deadline, Criteria

Interested applicants can learn more and apply here. The deadline to apply is March 14. Scholarships will be awarded by August.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Santa Rosa Junior College Men’s Baseball has cemented its status as the top team in California, earning the No. 1 ranking in the first 2025 California Community College Sports Information Association CCCSIA State Baseball Top 25 poll.

The Bear Cubs, currently undefeated at 14-0, received 15 of 17 first-place votes, making it the only unbeaten team in the state.

The three-time state champions —1952, 2005, 2016— are off to a dominant start this season as they begin Big 8 Conference play with a three-game series against Modesto.

The team's early-season success highlights its championship pedigree, placing it in a strong position for another title run, SRJC's athletic director, Matt Markovich, said.
