A strong magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in the North Pacific Ocean 165 km (103 mi) from United States in the evening of Monday, Sep 8, 2025 at 8.08 pm local time (GMT -8). The quake had a very shallow depth of 13.8 km (9 mi) and was felt widely in the area. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

According to preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake might have been felt by over 250,000 people across 2 countries: the United States (140,000) and the United States (100,000). For most people (96.5%), the quake might only have felt as barely noticeable or weak shaking if at all (intensities I-III). Approx. 9,050 people were in areas with light shaking (intensity IV), the highest intensity this quake likely produced over inhabited areas.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.A magnitude 6.0 earthquake 494 km east of this event struck this region on September 21, 1993 (UTC), with estimated population exposures of 47,000 at intensity VI and 1,000 at intensity VII, resulting in a reported 1 fatality.Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides and liquefaction that might have contributed to losses.Source: USGS

The risk of fatalities from this quake is considered low and classified as Level GREEN, the lowest on a color scale from Green (low) to Red (very high). USGS estimates that there is a 65.3% chance that there are no direct fatalities as effect of shaking and a 30.2% chance that between 1 and 10 fatalities occurred. The likelihood that there are more than 100 fatalities is less than 1%. The economic impact of this earthquake is expected to be minimal or small (Level GREEN). Only light damage if any should have occurred. USGS calculates an 65.3% chance of total economic loss in the range of 0-1 million US Dollars and a 30.2% risk of losses between 1 and 10 million US Dollars. Total economic loss from this quake is not likely to surpass 10 million US Dollars (less than 1% chance).

The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Port Orford, a town with 1,100 inhabitants in the United States, in 165 km (102 mi) distance east of the epicenter. Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 63 km² (24 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 14 km (9 mi).

The earthquake occurred 40 weeks after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake had hit on Thursday, Dec 5, 2024, at 10:44 am (GMT -8 local time) in 252 km (156 mi) distance to the southeast: This was also the strongest quake in this area in at least 10 years. There are many quakes in the area off Coos Bay, Bandon and Port Orford during the year, but at M 5.8 it's a bit larger than the usual 3.0 to 4.5 that occur out there.

There was no tsunami threat: it takes at least a 7.0 quake to start a tsunami.

It's a far cry from the Russian quake earlier this summer that created a tsunami alert across the entire Oregon and Washington coast.

Several people told the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website they had felt it, including a few from Portland – which is well over 500 miles. More plausible claims came from Coos Bay and northern California.

The quake hit near the Gorda Ridge, where these smaller shakers happen often.

The stretch from northern California up to just north of Coos Bay experiences frequent seismic activity, though these quakes are unrelated to the anticipated “big one” from the Cascadia Subduction Zone. That major event could strike tomorrow, next month, or perhaps not for several hundred years.

Earthquake magnitude scales can be misleadingly subtle. While a 7.0 may seem only marginally larger than a 4.0, the USGS notes that it’s actually 1,000 times greater in size - and releases over 31,000 times more energy.

Though this recent quake off the Oregon coast was larger than usual, scientists say it falls within the expected behavior of the Blanco Fracture Zone: the geologically active region marked by fault lines and structural weaknesses. It’s not directly tied to the Cascadia fault, but it serves as a stark reminder that the big one is inevitable.

Importantly, this activity doesn’t indicate that tectonic pressure is being relieved.

Seaside-based geologist Tom Horning explains that there’s significant interaction occurring beneath the offshore portions of Oregon’s coastline, where complex movements within the Earth’s crust continue to shape the region.
