Texas Rattlers' rider collects opening round win via flashy 87.5-pointer.
RENO, Nev. – As the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) PBR Reno rolled to a close on Friday night, Qynn Andersen (Koumala, Queensland, Australia) emerged victorious after riding his way to the Round 1 win with an 87.5-point ride.
The young Australian, who rides for the Texas Rattlers in the separate PBR Teams League, had the sold-out Nevada crowd cheering at full volume as he fired out of the chutes aboard Scrapper.
Anderson earned 28 Velocity Global points and heads into Saturday leading the charge after his first-place finish on Friday night.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
California Cowboy Andy Guzman (Oakdale, California) punched his ticket into Round 2 when he erupted from the chutes aboard Jericho to secure a second-place finish. Not far behind Andersen’s first-place ride, the 22-year-old athlete received an 86.5-point ride score, earning him 18 Velocity Global points.
Utah Cowboy Pokey Houghton (St. George, Utah) and Arizona’s Jaxton Mortensen (Chino Valley, Arizona) tied for third place in the round with matching 85.5-point ride scores.
In the opening round of the weekend, Houghton, the first man out for the evening, was paired with Peanut, showing complete control from the moment the gate flew open.
20-year-old Mortensen punched his ticket to Round 2 on Saturday night aboard Bert.
Houghton and Mortensen each collected 16.5 Velocity Global points for their efforts.
Rounding out the Top 5 of the night was 21-year-old Brady Turgeon (New River, Arizona). He successfully matched bovine athlete Cherry Bomb for an incredible 85-point ride.
For his fifth-place finish, Turgeon earned 15 Velocity Global points.
PBR Reno will continue inside the Reno Events Center as the top bull riders of the PWVT return for Round 2 followed by the Championship Round on Saturday, February 22 at 7 p.m. PST.
