Rio Vista - Caltrans is advising motorists of the next scheduled weekend closures of the Rio Vista Bridge (Helen Madere Memorial Bridge) on State Route 12 (SR 12) for ongoing repairs on Friday, June 6 through Monday, June 9.

One-way traffic control will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday and the full bridge closure will be in place by 11 p.m. (see schedule and detour map). Allow for extra travel time to reach your destination, especially for scheduled appointments and work schedules.

This $27.2 million project is funded through the Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program and has required multiple weekend closures for the work to be completed because of the limited width of the bridge to allow for heavy equipment access. This will be the fifth of six scheduled weekend closures on the project. The final weekend closure is scheduled for the weekend of June 20-23.

The project continues making necessary mechanical repairs, replacing the movable deck span and bridge rails. Completion is expected late this summer. During the weekend closures, the contractor will replace the bridge deck and 60 steel stringers needed to extend the service life of the structure, which was originally built in 1919 and rebuilt in 1960.

Due to the limited width of the bridge, extended weekend closures are necessary to facilitate safe access to the work for the contractor and Caltrans personnel. The weekend bridge closures have lessened total project workdays and helped avoid long wait times at peak commute hours.

Motorists could encounter additional travel times of up to two hours using detours from Rio Vista to Sacramento County on SR 12 across the Sacramento River.

Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment or material availability, or other unexpected events. Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements. Rio Vista, CA (May 24, 2025) – First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated individuals hurt in a two-vehicle crash that occurred early Friday afternoon on State Route 113 near the junction with State Route 12. The incident was reported at approximately 1:32 PM and involved a box truck and a second vehicle.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision resulted in the box truck veering off the roadway and crashing through a fence. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene to assist those involved and stabilize the situation.

One individual sustained visible lacerations and a suspected broken left leg. The injured party was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment. No additional injuries were reported, and officials have not released the identities of the drivers or stated whether citations have been issued.

Traffic in the area was temporarily affected as authorities managed the scene and began their investigation into the cause of the crash.
