Just 10 minutes ago, a 2.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Tuesday, July 8th, 2025, at 2:16 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 3.7 miles below the surface.The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.0.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Loyola (pop. 3,300) located 2 miles from the epicenter.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Los Altos (pop. 30,700) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Mountain View (pop. 80,400) 5 miles away, Cupertino (pop. 60,600) 5 miles away, Sunnyvale (pop. 155,800) 6 miles away, Palo Alto (pop. 66,900) 8 miles away, Santa Clara (pop. 126,200) 10 miles away, and San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) 13 miles away. In San Francisco (pop. 864,800, 35 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

Rite Aid’s massive collapse continues as more than 100 stores are now set to disappear.

One hundred and fourteen locations are on the latest closings list that Rite Aid announced in bankruptcy filings on Thursday.

Forty of the stores are located in the Keystone State.

The 114 stores are in addition to the 1,070 stores that Rite Aid previously announced it would close.

Last month, Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy for a second time to pursue “a strategic and value-maximizing sale process for substantially all of its assets.”

Rite Aid’s more than 1,200 stores are expected to close.

Rite Aid announced that it had entered into agreements for its pharmacy assets of more than 1,000 stores across the country.

CVS Pharmacy said that it has agreed to acquire the prescription files of 625 Rite Aid pharmacies across 15 states in areas that CVS serves, as well as acquire and operate 64 Rite Aid stores in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Giant Eagle has agreed to buy dozens of prescription files from Rite Aid pharmacies in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Weis Markets has agreed to buy the prescription files of 11 Rite Aid pharmacies in Pennsylvania and New York.

Walgreens has agreed to purchase prescription files in nine states.

Albertsons and Kroger have also agreed to buy prescription files.

Those agreements were approved in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, according to Reuters.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — The City of San Jose has canceled its Fourth of July fireworks show at Lake Cunningham after the fireworks planned for the show were destroyed in an explosion at a Yolo County fireworks facility. According to San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, the city is looking for a replacement or alternative to the planned fireworks show.

The party planned Friday at Lake Cunningham Park will still take place, according to city officials, but there will be no fireworks.

The Yolo County explosion occurred around 6 p.m. Tuesday at a fireworks storage warehouse in the area of Esparto and Madison near Country Road 23 and Country 86A. The fire grew to nearly 74 acres before forward progress was halted.

CalFire bomb and arson units are investigating the incident, in which seven people remain unaccounted for, according to fire officials.

Cloverdale fireworks also canceled

The Cloverdale Lions Club also announced Wednesday that it was cancelling its annual Fourth of July fireworks following the Yolo County explosion. The facility, about 22 miles north of Vacaville, was the designated supplier of professional-grade fireworks for the Cloverdale Lions Club 4th of July Aerial Fireworks Show.

St. Helena fireworks canceled

In Napa County, St. Helena also announced that its Fourth of July fireworks show had been canceled due to “vendor emergency.” All other July Fourth activities in town “will continue as plans,” according to city officials.

San Francisco city officials told KRON4 that SF’s planned fireworks display over the Embarcadero would go ahead as planned. It is not yet known if any other Bay Area Fourth of July fireworks shows will be impacted.

A deadly explosion at a fireworks storage facility in Yolo County has forced cities across Northern California to cancel or scale back their Fourth of July celebrations, leaving many communities scrambling ahead of the holiday.

The blast occurred Tuesday evening at a warehouse operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics near Esparto. The explosion ignited a wildfire that burned nearly 80 acres and left seven people unaccounted for, according to state and local fire officials.

The facility supplied fireworks to numerous municipalities throughout the region.

As a result, at least a dozen scheduled fireworks shows have been canceled or postponed.

In San Jose, the city called off its Lake Cunningham Park fireworks display but will move forward with the rest of the festivities, including a parade and live music.

“Our fireworks vendor was directly impacted by the warehouse explosion,” said Daniel Candelas, a city spokesperson. “However, we are working to pivot to a drone show.”

Cloverdale’s annual Chuck Sibert Pyro Spectacular, long a mainstay of the town’s holiday celebration, was canceled by the Lions Club. The group cited the destruction of their fireworks inventory in the Yolo County blast.

Other affected events include the Lodi Lake Fireworks Show, the St. Helena Fourth of July display, and the show at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway.

The New Stockton 99 Speedway canceled its July 3 fireworks, though its racing program will continue. In Marysville, the Yuba-Sutter fireworks event was postponed to July 5 and will use a different vendor.

The Esparto Volunteer Firefighters Association also canceled its own July 5 show “out of respect for the families and community affected by the recent tragic events.”

In St. Helena and other parts of wine country, officials pointed not only to the warehouse explosion but also to extreme heat and heightened fire danger in their decisions to cancel fireworks.

San Francisco’s waterfront fireworks display remains on schedule, and some inland cities unaffected by the warehouse blast are moving ahead with their plans.

Still, the ripple effect from the Yolo County explosion has cast a shadow over what is typically one of the busiest nights of the year for public celebrations across the state.

State and federal investigators, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are working to determine the cause of the explosion. Evacuation orders remain in place around the site.

San Jose, CA (July 6, 2025) – A crash involving two vehicles left at least one person injured on Highway 101 near Blossom Hill Rd in San Jose. The collision, reported at approximately 10:03 p.m., caused one of the vehicles to overturn onto its roof, prompting a swift emergency response.
