Brian Charette is a household name in the world of modern jazz. Music was a family affair for Charette, whose mother, Catherine, introduced her son to music! Before he was even out of high school, he was sharing the stage with jazz legends, including Lou Donaldson and Houston Person. Studying music was inevitable and Charette graduated UConn with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1994. Brian Charette is a top-selling artist, who tours the United States and Europe, with over 20 albums to his credit. Many of his albums became best-sellers on iTunes and were featured in Jazzweek.

Charette is a versatile, award-winning recording artist, who won the 2014 Downbeat Critics’ "Poll Rising Star: Organ” award and the 2015 Hot House Magazine “Fan’s Decision Jazz Award for Best Organist”. After serving in the U.S. Navy Seabee and working as a federal investigator, Sacha Butts found herself navigating the in-home care system when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. The difference one great caregiver made during that difficult time had a lasting impact, inspiring her to offer the same kind of compassionate support to others. With a deep commitment to service, thorough research and a desire to return the gift of relief she once received, Butts is now bringing Right at Home* to Simi Valley, Moorpark, Somis, and Camarillo in California to help families age with dignity and peace of mind.

1851 spoke with Butts to learn more about her story, her decision to open a Right at Home franchise and her plans for the future.

1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?

Sacha Butts: Prior to purchasing the franchise, I served in the military in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee and then became a federal investigator. I started researching home care after my mom was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer. That’s when I got introduced to in-home care. We went through various agencies, and we were fortunate to have one caregiver who was amazing — very supportive and helpful. It made the process so much easier and less stressful. It allowed me to go back to being a daughter, not just a caregiver. I wanted to be able to give that same peace of mind to someone else.

1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?

Butts: The statistics for success are much higher when starting a franchise versus building something from scratch. That was a big factor for me — I wanted that support and structure.

1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?

Butts: Right at Home didn’t just focus on the money. They cared more about why I wanted to do this. Other brands seemed more focused on when you could pay and how much you could invest. Right at Home stood out because they didn’t just let anyone in — they wanted to make sure I was doing it for the right reasons. They also didn’t try to upsell me on multiple territories right away. They encouraged me to start with one, learn the process and grow from there. The emphasis on support after opening was also a big differentiator.

1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?

Butts: The long-term goal is to eventually expand to a second territory. Right now, I want to make sure we’re providing excellent care and building strong relationships with the community.

1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?

Butts: I was pretty thorough with my research. It was something I had already been thinking about before my mom got sick. I took my time, asked the questions I needed to ask, and reviewed everything carefully. I even read the Franchise Disclosure Document before it was sent to me. I wanted to make sure I had a good understanding and wasn’t rushing into it. You really need to know what you’re getting into, and do the work to get prepared.
