Inside the former Postal Cafe restaurant in New Washoe City on Eastlake Boulevard, Anneke Schat’s Coffee & Pastry has opened up shop, serving fresh baked goods, coffee and smoothies, and even functions as something of a small market for local producers.
This is because, for owner Anneke Schat, it’s all about supporting local farmers and bringing the community together over her fresh baked, artisanal treats.
In addition, Anneke’s hosts pop-up events such as a cookie decorating class for kids, sourdough pizza dinners, and most recently, a local farmers and makers market every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the summer.
Anneke’s is the third Nevada bakery to come out of the Schat’s family, following in the footsteps of Paul Schat’s Bakery in Carson City, run by her brother, and Schat’s Bakery & Restaurant in Minden, run by her nephew. Anneke Schat is the daughter of Erick Schat, who started the flagship Schat’s Bakery in Bishop, Calif. until his death in 2021.
The Schat family comes from a long line of Dutch bakers dating all the way back to 1890s Holland, Schat said, with several members of the family operating bakeries throughout California and Nevada.
Before opening its new brick-and-mortar storefront, Schat operated Anneke’s as a one-woman mobile pastry cart, traveling around Washoe Valley for three years.
“I’ve had my eye on this location for a while, but it had been leased out, so I just kept running the bakery cart,” Schat said. “I was open four days a week, towing it every day, even in the snow.”
Now in its permanent home, the shop was able to expand their menu with offerings like sourdough cookies, breakfast croissants, antioxidant bread, fruit danishes, fresh soup and sandwiches and more.
According to Schat, all the pastries are either baked on-site or brought in fresh daily from Paul Schat’s Bakery in Carson City. In addition, the espresso bar uses local beans from Glory Cloud Coffee Roasters in Sparks, and for non-coffee drinkers there is a selection of tea, Italian sodas, and fruit smoothies.
What makes Anneke’s more than just a place to grab a latte and treat is her commitment to partnering with local farmers as part of the farm-to-table movement.
“I want to make sure that we’re supporting local farmers from the Valley as much as possible,” Schat said. “For the sandwiches, [we use] local ingredients as much as we can.”
The Farm-to-table concept typically involves sourcing products directly from farmers and ranchers to provide fresh, seasonal offerings to the community, while stimulating the local economy, which, according to the USDA, is a concept that began at the turn of the 20th century.
In their commitment to supporting the movement, Anneke’s sells several local products including jarred pickled vegetables from Tillie’s Nevada, local wagyu beef from Watershed Ranch, handmade soap from Blue Canoe Soap Co. made with espresso grounds – and even fresh eggs from Schat’s own chicken farm, among other items.
In addition to their pop-up events, Anneke’s offers a place to host private events – or, if you want Anneke’s to come to you, they also provide catering services.
The Washoe Valley location won’t be the last in the slow Schat expansion east; Anneke said she hopes to eventually open a second location in South Reno.
However, for now, she said she is happy to have a community space where people can gather and “enjoy the spoils of Washoe Valley.”
“People are always looking for spaces to host [events], and there’s not a lot to choose from out here,” Schat said. “So it’s a special place.”
