Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR § 261.50(a)(b), and to provide for public safety, the following acts are prohibited within the Wenatchee River and Entiat/Chelan Ranger Districts of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. This Order supersedes Order 06-17-07-25-31 dated September 6, 2025, signed by Forest Supervisor Tara Umphries. This Order is effective September 23, 2025 and will remain in effect through December 31, 2025 unless rescinded sooner.

PROHIBITIONS: 1. Entering or being upon National Forest System Lands closed for the protection of public health and safety, as described below, and displayed on the attached map, Exhibit A [36 CFR § 261.53 (e)].

2. Being on a National Forest System Trail, as described below and displayed on the attached map, Exhibit A [36 CFR § 261.55 (a)].

3. Being on a National Forest System Road as described below and displayed on the attached map, Exhibit A [36 CFR § 261.54 (e)].

CLOSURE AREA DESCRIPTION: This closure applies to all National Forest lands, roads and trails within the closure area boundary:

Closure begins at the National Forest boundary junction with Eagle Creek Rd in T.26N, R.18E, in sec. 29. Closure then proceeds N following the National Forest boundary to the junction with the western boundary of sec. 32, T.26N, R.18E. Closure then proceeds N following the western boundary of sections 32, 29, 20, 17, 8, 5 to the junction of the western boundary of sec. 32, T.26N, R.18E. Closure then proceeds N following the western boundary of sections 32, 29, and 20 until junction with FSR 6101 at T.27N, R.18E, sec. 20.

Closure then follows FSR 6101 to Maverick Saddle Trailhead and the junction with FSR 5200 at T. 27N, R. 18E, sec. 16. Closure then proceeds N following FST 1409.1 to the junction with FST 1415 at T.28N, R. 18E, sec. 29. Closure then proceeds following FST 1415, generally E, to junction with FST 1423 at T.28N, R.18E, sec. 27. Closure then proceeds NE following FST 1423 until it meets the west side of the Entiat River at T.28N, R.18E, sec. PB41.

Closure then proceeds generally S following the west bank of the Entiat River to the junction with the National Forest boundary at T.27N, R.19E, sec.15. Closure also includes an FS section adjacent to the National Forest boundary located at T.25N, R.20E, sec.15. Closure then follows the National Forest boundary generally S, then W and then N to the origin of the closure at T.26N, R.18E, sec 29.

Washington’s new converted hybrid-electric ferry, the Wenatchee, is out of service for the foreseeable future after a mechanical error caused the ferry to lose power.

The ferry returned to service on July 24, but is now out of order at the Eagle Harbor maintenance facility near the Bainbridge Island ferry dock.

WA’s hybrid-electric ferry is out of service

The problem with the ferry occurred at approximately 10 a.m. Friday, when the Wenatchee was near Seattle’s Coleman Dock. Two of the four drive motors went offline unexpectedly, causing the ferry to lose power momentarily. The motors were back online a few minutes later, and crews sailed the ferry into a nearby maintenance facility.

Engine crews, maintenance teams, and technicians at Eagle Harbor are currently working to determine the cause of the ferry’s issue, a Washington State Ferries (WSF) spokesperson, Dana Warr, wrote via email to .

Ferry workers found the control system’s communication wires were unstable, causing the motors to shut down. A generator powered by a diesel engine drives the motors, which power the propellers of the ferry. Once electric charging stations are built at terminals, this will change.

Warr told The Seattle Times the issue has been difficult to find because it “may only happen at certain speeds or in certain operating conditions,” but also noted these issues are a “normal part of vessel commissioning.”

The Wenatchee being pulled from service has not affected the overall sailing schedules with the rest of the fleet, according to ferry officials. The hybrid-electric ferry had been running the Seattle and Bainbridge Island route before its malfunction.

The Walla Walla and the Tacoma ferries will continue to sail the Seattle and Bainbridge route in the meantime.

“When the review is complete, the issue is addressed, and we’re confident it can be returned to safe service, we will do so,” Warr told The Seattle Times. “Our teams are working hard to resolve the issue so we can perform sea trials, which when successful will allow the vessel to return to service.”

The 22-month-long conversion of the Wenatchee cost $133 million, making the ferry the largest hybrid-electric ferry in North America.

But, if you want to get out and receive an up-close view of autumn's colors, there are eight miles of hiking trails, five miles of horse trails, and seven miles of biking trails to explore here.

Lake Wenatchee doesn’t receive as much attention as some of the other Washington state parks, but we love this hidden gem during the fall so much that we included it in our list of the most beautiful fall destinations in Washington.

It's hard to predict when to see the fall foliage in Washington, so you'll need to be flexible if you want to see it at its peak. One cold snap could change everything, but in 2025, you are likely to witness the fall colors at their peak in early October.
