Remote surveillance trailer in Carson City, NV

Businesses like yours that exist in today's commercial landscape have to navigate a litany of complex security challenges that go beyond their property and premises. We're talking about criminals intent on trespassing, theft, squatting, vandalism, and more. Unfortunately, conventional security efforts are often underwhelming and ineffective in managing modern risks. That's because traditional systems are reactive, not proactive, by nature. That means they're designed to respond to criminal acts after they've happened. Typical responses from these systems include sounding alarms and notifying the authorities - but only after trespassers are on-site. This type of response leads to unnecessary false alarms and frustratingly slow police response times, giving criminals the opportunity to escape with sensitive assets, data, and more.

Mr. Security Camera was founded to address these shortcomings by offering business owners like you proactive, comprehensive security solutions you can count on. With innovative tools like a remote surveillance trailer in Carson City, NV, you can get ahead of security breaches, deter potential criminals from committing crimes, and solidify the overall safety of your property without having to rely on outdated security models. By focusing on prevention and lightning-fast response times, we help make peace of mind plentiful for today's most successful property owners and managers.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nevada Monday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey, with shaking felt as far west as California.

The quake struck 15 miles north-northeast of the town of Yerington, about 40 miles east of Carson City, at 3:08 p.m. local time. More than 10,000 people reported feeling the earthquake on the U.S. Geological Survey website in a little over two hours after it hit.

Fourteen aftershocks struck the same area before 5:30 p.m., ranging in size from 2.5 to 4.2. The initial quake's depth was reported at a relatively shallow 8.4 kilometers beneath the earth's surface. Any quake less than 70 kilometers deep is considered to be shallow by USGS standards.

Strong to very strong shaking was felt near the earthquake's epicenter, according to a USGS intensity map, with Carson City and Reno seeing light to moderate shaking.

No injuries or damages have been reported.

Shaking felt in western, northern California

According to the USGS, the shaking from the earthquake could be felt as far west as San Francisco and up to Sacramento in California.

Residents in Sacramento saw ornaments on a Christmas tree sway, water sloshing in a swimming pool, and a computer swaying for a few seconds, according to the Los Angeles Times.

According to the USGS intensity map, the shaking reported in California was of weak to light intensity.

Magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck California last week

The Nevada earthquake comes just days after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck California.

The quake hit Thursday near the town of Petrolia, about 265 miles north of San Francisco, and generated a strong shake and a short-lived tsunami warning that stretched from southern Oregon to San Francisco.

More than 150,000 people could have been exposed to earthquake shaking, between just north of Fort Bragg to Eureka, according to U.S. Geological Survey estimates.

The quake occurred at 10:44 a.m. local time near the sparsely populated northern coast of California, just offshore, and was felt across Humboldt County. By 12:30 p.m., less than two hours after the initial quake, the area had experienced 13 different aftershocks, ranging from 5.1 to 3.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. By 2:30 p.m., the USGS had reported at least 39 aftershocks of at least a 2.5 magnitude in the region, including Petrolia and Ferndale.

An ‘intensity’ map from the U.S. Geological Survey for Monday’s earthquake near Yerington.

Nevada Appeal staff report

Published: Monday, December 9, 2024

Update Dec. 10:

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory determined Monday’s 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurring at 3:08 p.m. local time occurred on an unnamed fault between Yerington and Silver Springs in Lyon County.

The earthquake occurred at about 11.5 kilometers, or about 7 miles deep, in a fault zone called the Wabuska Lineament, and could be felt as far as San Francisco and along the coast, according to Seismological Laboratory Director Christie Rowe on Tuesday.

Reports initially indicated varying reports of a magnitude 5.8 from the U.S. Geological Survey and downgraded to a 5.7 and 5.5.

“The initial information is an automated algoritm that is posted as quickly as possible,” Rowe explained the process to the Appeal. “Our analysts will go in and carefully locate where the earthquake is. There is a little feedback, and what we saw was what was jumping and as we settled.”

Monday’s earthquake was a left-lateral strike slip along the Wabuska Lineament, a cluster of northeast-striking faults in the mountains east of Reno.

Members of the public who felt the earthquake is requested to fill out a form on the U.S. Geological Survey website indicating the intensity of shaking at their location.

Rowe said the location of the earthquake changed as staff was able to better process the data. Preliminary reports indicated a magnitude of 5.5. near the epicenter and distances ranging approximately 25.6 kilometers north-northeast of Yerington, 52.4 kilometers south-southeast of Fernley and 66.3 kilometers east of Carson City. But the 5.8 magnitude registered as 47.5 kilometers south-southeast of Fernley, 66 kilometers of Carson City and 72.9 kilometers east-southeast of Sparks.

Rowe reminds residents Nevada remains seismically active.

“As a rule, we see 5.0 earthquakes every five years or so and 6.0 almost every 10 years,” she said. “We don’t see something like this often. But we’re feeling relieved nobody was hurt. It’s a safety reminder.”

She said it’s a good time to remind the public to stay up-to-date on their safety drills. Nevada’s schools, many of which participate in the Great Nevada ShakeOut at www.shakeout.org/nevada to encourage students to plan drills to drop, cover and hold.

“If people are inspired by this, then I’d say to make sure they have earthquake safety kids in schools or homes,” she said. “The kids have done great with the Great ShakeOut, and they can go to the (website) to find checklists for their communities.”

Original post Dec. 9

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.5 earthquake occurred between 14-16 miles northeast of Yerington, Nev., at 3:08 p.m. Monday.

The seismic activity could be felt in Carson City and Carson Valley, with the Appeal's office in downtown Carson shaking visibly.

Micah Horton, CCFD battalion chief, on his way to what he believed to be an unrelated structure fire at Rand Court, said he had heard of no injuries or damage stemming from the quake as of 3:20 p.m. Monday.

Rick Cooley, deputy director of Carson City Public Works, also said he had no reports of damaged infrastructure, water pipes, sewer line or roadway, as of 3:30 p.m.

There were no major reports of damage in Lyon County as of 3:30 p.m., according to Taylor Allison, emergency management and government affairs director. She said county crews were checking for potential issues.

UNR's Seismological Lab showed Monday afternoon multiple 2.5-3.6 aftershocks in the area following the larger quake.

Marine Corps names Carson City man honorary Marine

Carson City resident Nicholas Campbell, 25, on Wednesday was awarded a title of Honorary Marine by the U.S. Marine Corps for courage and dedication in his fight against cancer that has resulted in end-stage liver failure.

“I'm grateful and I'll always be grateful now I'm a Marine in a way, even if it's for a day,” Campbell said. “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”

The presentation was provided by Marines based in Sacramento with representatives from U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei’s office to show their support, thanks to Campbell’s mother, Frankie Shy, and the Northern Nevada Dream Center. Shy hosted the event with NNDC Executive Director Susan Sorenson. Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell and Assemblyman PK O’Neill were in attendance, and O’Neill provided Campbell a certificate on behalf of the state.

“I think that this will put one more feather in his hat to where he feels like his life was worth something,” Shy said Tuesday. “I think it’s such a great honor. My family goes back to the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).”

Campbell hoped to go into the U.S. Marine Corps and follow in the footsteps of his family.

“Even though I am unlucky in some ways, I look at my mom and I don't think, without her help, I don't think I would have made it this far,” Campbell said.

But even though he participated in Carson High’s NJROTC program for almost two years, Campbell developed a benign tumor on his chest and other symptoms. He saw a series of specialists and his kidneys began to fail. He would eventually have a liver transplant.

“They don’t know how to fix him,” Shy said. “(The doctors) have done every test known to the Mayo Clinic.”

His medical journey became so complex, they would involve trips to the University of Utah.

“Unfortunately, he did not finish high school, and it was his wish to,” Shy said. “In resolving his health issues, something else popped up. It’s been a rare disease he’s challenged with, and there’s nothing else we can do. He’s on hospice.”

Sacramento’s Maintenance Services Co.’s 1st Sgt. Xuchill Lupit, SSgt. Madeline Gifford and Cpl. Joshua Windham traveled to present a special certificate to Campbell, who expressed his gratitude.

Lupit said it was an honor to make the trip.

“It was a great opportunity to be able to come here and do this at his request with the current situation he’s in,” Lupit said. “He’s definitely a lively individual. … He definitely would have fit in.”

Shy, who works at Gold Dust West, said she’s taken on $45,000 in credit card debt to help fund Campbell’s treatment.

“I’ve had to swallow my pride and I’ve gone through my 401(k), all of my savings,” she said. “I’m going to have to work until my body gives out. I just need to start focusing on living a simple life, and I’m just spinning my wheels right now.”

The Northern Nevada Dream Center has helped Shy and Campbell in starting a GoFundMe page to help fundraise, and the goal is to provide at least $25,000 for the family.

O’Neill said he was proud to represent the community and the state.

“I know the man has tried hard and well to keep his family service reputation,” O’Neill said. “The very least we can do is to honor him and his whole family for what they've done collectively and individually.”

Carson High School’s NJROTC program provided him with a certificate of recognition and shadowbox with ribbons presented by three students in a ceremony, Shy said.

The suggestion to receive assistance from the Northern Nevada Dream Center came from Bagwell.

“I felt so honored to hook her up with the Dream Center because I knew that that was a good fit,” Bagwell said. “It's no wonder that I see such a strong young man is because you see a role model of a man that was able to just truly tell him, this is adversity and this is how we come through it.”

Donations will assist with medical expenses and end-of-life care. Funds raised will cover mounting medical bills and car repairs for Campbell’s mother, according to updates from the NNDC.

She’s also thankful for other agencies who have helped in simple ways.

“It’s getting back into a car, laying him down, getting into a hotel,” she said. “The (Carson City) Fire Department was nice enough. His birthday was in August. He wanted to see the new ‘Deadpool’ movie. They helped him get him to my SUV. They helped him get into the movie theater.”

Wednesday’s event would be memorable for the family, according to NNDC Dream Center’s Susan Sorenson.

"We are so proud of Nick and being able to watch him fight so courageously has been an honor,” Sorenson said. "Being named an Honorary Marine is a testament to his strength and determination, and we are deeply grateful to the Marine Corps for recognizing him in this way."
